POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant teacher provides academic and behavioral support to students in our classroom setting. This position works closely with teachers, administrators, and families to help each student succeed academically and socially.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the leadership and direction of the Lead Classroom Teacher, One City Assistant Teachers assure that all students receive a high quality and inspiring learning experience that helps them reach their full potential. They provide a warm, nurturing, safe and encouraging learning environment where self-esteem is enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality is respected. Specific performance responsibilities include:

Help establish a classroom culture that is safe, collaborative, celebratory and intellectually challenging for all students, and that learning goals for all students are met;

• Support and participate in the development and execution of units of study and lesson plans that align State Standards, EL Education and related curricula in math, science, social studies to promote students’ in-depth understanding, critical thinking, problem solving, mastery of knowledge and skills, character development, achievement and commitment to high quality work;
• Help monitor and supervise effective classroom and school-wide structures that promote active, student-driven learning and positive student behavior and safety;
• Help maintain an orderly, academically-focused classroom environment and effective management of instructional materials and records;
• Keep current in knowledge and practice of the curriculum, child development and relevant theories of learning, and be willing to share their knowledge for continual improvement of One City’s educational program and curriculum.
• Assist in on-going curriculum reviews, including offering feedback on school and program effectiveness.
• Become acquainted with supplemental materials and services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
• Build and maintain positive and engaging relationships with parents/families and work cooperatively with them to strengthen the educational program for their children.
• Engage in effective community building, including rituals and traditions that build a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
• Participate in regular and ongoing professional development efforts and work collaboratively with grade level planning to constantly improve professional practice;
• Participate fully and positively in a staff culture and the relentless pursuit of our mission; and
• Work cooperatively with grade level and the school team in all areas of instruction, assessment, documentation, parent/guardian involvement, and classroom management.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

• Strong commitment to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of One City, and to working with young children from diverse racial/cultural populations and their families. 
• Associate degree, 48+ credits in college, or a passed ParaPro Praxis exam (or willingness to take) 
• Proficient use of office equipment: computer, multi-phone and voice messaging systems, fax and copier. 
• Proficient use of Microsoft Office and related computer programs: word processing, databases, spreadsheets, bookkeeping, email and Internet; significant comfort learning and using new technology and software. 
• Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills. 
• Dedication to continuous learning, and personal and professional development.  
• Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive. 
• Ability to regularly and routinely lift and push at least 50 pounds. 
• Completion of a background check is required.

Established in 2014, One City Schools, Inc. is a nonprofit school management organization based in Madison, Wisconsin that operates high quality preschools and public charter 4K - 12 schools in Wisconsin. One City's mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures children and teens are on track to succeed in a college or career preparatory program from birth through high school graduation. One City Preschool (OCP) is an accredited, award-winning, tuition-based early childhood learning center operated by One City Schools, Inc. that serves children ages 3 months through 4 years. OCP is accredited by the City of Madison (WI) Child Care Division and recognized as a 5-Star (out of 5) childcare program by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. Note: OCP also operates a preschool serving infants and one-year-olds, but these age levels are currently only available to the staff of One City Schools.

One City Elementary School (OCES) is a tuition-free public charter school in Madison, Wisconsin, dedicated to preparing children in grades 4K to 5 to have a positive and sustainable impact on the world.
