At Ben Hall Law, we take pride in relentless representation through motion practice —we are not a plea-bargain firm. If you are looking to develop litigation skills, challenge the state or federal government, and gain hands-on experience in trial and appellate advocacy, this is the place for you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Negotiate with prosecutors to secure favorable outcomes, such as reduced charges or sentences, when appropriate.
  • Advocate zealously for clients in court, presenting compelling arguments and cross-examining witnesses effectively.
  • Collaborate with investigators and expert witnesses to build strong defenses.
  • Maintain detailed case files and provide regular updates to clients on case status.
  • Assist with trial preparations , including, on occasion, acting as opposing counsel for mock trials/hearings.
  • Act as second chair at trials and hearings alongside senior counsel.
  • Stay informed on developments in criminal law and procedural rules to provide the most effective representation.
  • Draft exceptional motions and briefs that advance clients’ positions, including novel legal arguments.
  • Draft and file interlocutory appeals and assist with oral argument preparations before state and federal appellate courts.

Qualifications

Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
Bar Admission: Licensed to practice law in Michigan, or eligible for licensure in Michigan before the start date.
Experience:

  • 0-3 years of legal experience.

Skills:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong legal research and analytical abilities.
  • Commitment to client advocacy and ethical practice.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience handling criminal cases.
  • Established relationships with local legal and judicial communities in Michigan.
  • Fluency in a foreign language.

Why Join Us?

  • Make a real impact by defending the accused and advocating for justice.
  • Gain significant courtroom experience early in your career.
  • Be part of a dynamic and growing firm that values litigation skills and strong advocacy.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Access to continuing legal education and professional development resources.

Benefits

  • 401(k) with up to 4% firm match
  • Four weeks of paid time off
  • One week of sick time
  • Paid holidays
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Short term disability, long term disability, and life insurance (paid for by the Firm)
  • Technology to effectively perform your job
