Job Description

We are seeking a Financial Officer, Clinical Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) who will collaborate with a portfolio of School of Medicine?s (SOM) complex clinical departments. This role ensures effective communication and understanding of financial activities, manages financial performance analysis, and provides strategic recommendations for budget goals and decisions. Key responsibilities include preparing budgets, variance analyses, and executive-level material preparation, as well as leading ad hoc FP&A projects. The Financial Officer, Clinical FP&A will report to the Director, Clinical FP&A.


Johns Hopkins School of Medicine has a $3 billion annual operating budget. The School comprises thirty-seven clinical and basic science departments and institutes, in addition to several Central School operating units. The SOM Central Finance Office collaborates with staff and management throughout the departments and central administration. This role will specifically interact most with the clinical departments.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Collaborates/Manages

  • Meets regularly with assigned clinical departments to independently foster relationships and ensure two-way communication, creating advocacy for departments, knowledge transfer with central finance, and a shared understanding of financial activities and schedules.
  • Proactively manages own time and prioritizes responsibilities.
  • Takes initiative to follow through to completion on action plans identified with departments.
  • Partners with Director, Dean's Office, FP&A analysts, department staff, Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) / Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Budget, SOM Central Finance, and JHHS / JHU Finance.
  • Exercises influence with departments to enforce financial policies and encourage best practices.


Analyzes/Interprets

  • Analyzes the financial performance of assigned clinical departments to identify areas for improvement and track progress to budget goals.
  • Reviews data in aggregate for clinical departments to analyze and interpret financial activities and inform recommendations.
  • Provides recommendations for critical financial business decisions. Extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems to perform related reviews.
  • Evaluates business plans submitted by departments and advises on accuracy, completeness, and long-term viability, offering guidance where necessary.


Creates/Prepares/Develops

  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, variance analyses, and related analyses for assigned clinical departments, regularly synthesizing large amounts of data to reach results and formulate recommended actions.
  • Utilizes analytical outcomes to create materials utilized for executive leadership meetings, including trustee presentations, meetings with the JHU President?s Office and major donors.
  • Assists, and at times leads, ad hoc FP&A projects.
  • Mentors and helps train central finance and clinical department administrative staff, as needed.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

  • Advocates for clinical departments to ensure they are receiving funding for their activities and can hire staff.
  • Monitors financial metrics performance, develops models and reports, and ensures two-way communications with clinical departments to access their financial performance and if a corrective action plans, as warranted.

  • Advanced knowledge in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Experience with other data reporting tools.
  • Strong customer service orientation and focus on details, accuracy, and meeting pre-determined deadlines.
  • Proficiency in organizing work schedules and efficiently allocating time to key tasks
  • Ability to proactively manage competing expectations and deliverables.
  • Adept at gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing data from multiple sources to uncover insights and inform decision-making.
  • Ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, audition, accounts receivable and reserve analysis.
  • Ability to approach complex financial issues with curiosity, seeking to understand underlying causes and solve problems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible financial and business operations experience, including experience in research financial management, clinical business operations, or comparable environment.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other functions required.
  • Proven communication, organizational, and analytic skills in a complex organization.
  • Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Master?s degree in Finance, Business or a related field.
  • Fund accounting experience.
  • SAP experience.
  • Oracle and/or SmartView experience.
