Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University offers a residency in small animal surgery at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. The program is certified with the ACVS and will allow the resident to fulfill the requirements of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons as described in the ACVS Residency Training Standards and Requirements. Residents will fulfill the minimum number of supervised and unsupervised surgeries in all categories as required by the ACVS. The residency is supported by three ACVS board certified surgeons. Residents rotate through soft tissue and orthopedic surgery/neurosurgery blocks of 2 or more weeks. The residents are in charge of running the service, sometimes with another more senior resident, and are always under the supervision of an attending surgeon. Generally, orthopedic surgery operates Monday, Wednesday and Friday and receives on Tuesday and Thursday. Soft tissue surgery operates Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and receives patients on Monday and Wednesday. Residents are expected to participate in daily ward rounds, resident conferences, weekly surgery case rounds, and bi-weekly lecture reviews, which are attended by senior faculty. The residents assist senior faculty in veterinary medical student surgery laboratories and surgery continuing education courses. The Iowa State University, Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center offers a 105,000 square foot state-of-the-art small animal hospital with equipment for the highest level of diagnosis, treatment, and care of our patients. The small animal surgery residency is also supported by excellent facilities and faculty in internal medicine, radiology, anesthesiology, oncology, dermatology, theriogenology, and pathology. The residents rotate through an emergency surgery schedule, with backup provided by senior faculty or senior residents. Eleven weeks per year will be spent performing research, preparation of scientific manuscripts, continuing education courses, special rotations in anesthesiology, radiology, internal medicine/critical care and pathology, or vacation. The residents have support to fulfill the research and publication requirements of the ACVS. Residents will be encouraged to attend the AO/ASIF course and present the results of their research at the ACVS Surgical Summit. Appointments will be made for 12 months, with annual renewal based on satisfactory completion of the previous year. The resident will be awarded with a certificate of residency upon successful completion of the training program. Residency program will be nullified if there is failure to maintain program registration status with the ACVS.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree

  • Successful completion of small animal rotating internship

  • Successful or anticipated completion of small animal surgical internship by position start date

Preferred Qualifications:

Attendance to advanced surgical training courses or laboratories, preferably total joint replacement
